Go from real estate rookie to mogul with this introductory guide to the world of real estate investing podcasts. This roundup will help you cut through analysis paralysis and hone in on the resources that will most dramatically accelerate your journey towards financial independence with real estate.
Information Overload
The digital ecosystem has created a permission-less society. High quality, low cost, or even free, content rolls out by the second. Creators and educators are no longer constrained by “the system.” The influence of hallowed Ivy League halls and profit-maximizing publishing houses has diminished.
Podcasts, blog posts, self-published guides and books, online learning communities and many other mediums have gained remarkable traction. And social media has broken down the institutional barriers even further. Have a question for your favorite expert on virtually any subject in the world? DM them on Instagram or Twitter…many will respond within the day.
This renaissance has undoubtedly benefitted the most intellectually curious learners. Yet ironically, this wealth of content and unparalleled access has paralyzed many students. It’s the paradox of choice at work. The quantity of information and options overwhelms. We feel pressure to find the best podcast, the best blog, or the best course. Analysis paralysis begins to dominate as the satisfaction and fulfillment associated with mastering a new concept erodes.
Enthusiastic Response to Real Estate Investing
What does all of this fancy talk have to do with Cash Snacks? Well, since writing about how to analyze any real estate deal in seconds and getting an offer accepted in the hottest markets, many readers have reached out with enthusiasm. They want to dig in. They want to learn about building passive income and escaping the golden handcuffs binding them to their corporate roles. But they don’t know where to begin.
After answering enough of these one-off requests asking for my recommendations, I decided to create this “syllabus” for readers to reference. It’s a roundup of the top real estate investing podcasts in my personal lineup. I hope it helps you cut through analysis paralysis and accelerate your real estate investing journey.
It’s the guide I wish I had when I first got started. Happy listening!
One quick housekeeping note: these are not listed in any particular order…dive in as you see fit.
My Top 5 Real Estate Investing Podcast Recommendations
(1) Real Estate Investing and Financial Independence with Coach Carson
I love the way this show frames success in real estate investing as a means to an end. Rather than the end itself. Chad “Coach” Carson is a humble and practical educator. He has a knack for breaking down complex topics into comprehensible pieces that everyone can understand.
And he certainly walks the walk. After graduating from Clemson University in the early 2000s, Coach Carson built a sizable rental portfolio with a focus on the student housing niche. Now that he’s established sufficient passive income to support his lifestyle, Coach Carson dives deep into the psychology around financial independence and legacy creation.
The show’s transparency also shines. He takes listeners through personal “days in the life”, conducts self-reviews and reflections, and shares his greatest mistakes to help others avoid them.
An added bonus: Chad was a standout football player at Clemson. I always enjoy the way he weaves sports analogies into his investing content.
Think of Chad like that cool uncle you hope you get seated next to at Thanksgiving. He’s approachable, full of incredible stories, and happy to share whatever knowledge he can to help others succeed. I highly recommend this one.
(2) Real Estate 101 by The Investor’s Podcast Network
Another staple in my podcast rotation, this show hosted by Robert Leonard makes real estate investing accessible and relatable. Robert, a young millennial professional himself, probes an A-List lineup of real estate investors with the questions you wish you could ask.
He’s also successfully employed a variety of real estate strategies in his own life. From “house hacks“, to “live-in flips“, to out of state buy and hold rentals. All this while maintaining his role as corporate financial manager (though he recently quit to pursue real estate more seriously).
In short, this is a fantastic podcast for newbie millennial investors looking to take massive action. Robert proves that with enough determination and hustle, you can succeed in real estate investing at any age from any background.
(3) Real Estate Rookie Podcast by BiggerPockets
This was the first real estate podcast that I ever came across. It provides the perfect introduction to the world of real estate investing from BiggerPockets, one of the most prominent real estate investing platforms on the planet.
Side note: I recommend virtually every piece of content that BiggerPockets publishes. Their online forums also allow users to network seamlessly with investors across the world. I’m shocked by the amount of time more seasoned investors routinely spend mentoring younger investors on the platform. I’ve personally built some transformative relationships through the site.
But anyway, back to the podcast.
Co-hosts Ashley Kehr and Tony Robinson are “newish” investors themselves, but they come at real estate from different angles. Ashley invests primarily in local rental properties around upstate New York. On the other hand, Tony began investing in out of state rentals before pivoting towards vacation homes / Airbnb’s.
The duo hosts individuals who are often near the beginning of their investing journeys. Most guests have completed just one or a handful of deals. As a listener, this creates a prime opportunity to learn real-time alongside peers struggling with similar questions or concerns.
I also appreciate the extra effort the show makes to break down jargon or complexities that other podcasts expect listeners to understand without explanation.
Of the five shows listed, this may be the best place for you to start as a complete beginner.
(4) BiggerPockets Real Estate Podcast
The flagship program on the BiggerPockets network. It’s one of the most popular podcasts across any vertical, real estate or otherwise.
Co-hosts Brandon Turner and David Greene are both incredibly successful real estate investors and entrepreneurs.
Brandon built an empire from scratch, going from a dejected Starbucks barista in his early twenties to millionaire real estate investor and syndicator by thirty. He now runs a real estate investment fund focusing on a niche mobile home park strategy.
David began his career as a police officer in California, investing in house hacks and out of state real estate deals on the side. After building enough wealth through real estate, he quit his job and dedicated his attention to real estate full time. He now runs a prominent residential real estate brokerage firm on the west coast in addition to his personal investing ventures.
These guys interview the big fish!
While the Real Estate Rookie show is more relatable for newbies, this podcast encourages listeners to level up and think BIG. I’m ready to run full speed at any obstacle life throws my way after listening most weeks.
The show has also recently placed an increased emphasis on investor mindset. It’s fascinating to hear about the unwavering intentionality many of the most successful real estate investors have applied throughout their lives. I love soaking in this perspective at an early age as it provides deeper purpose and ambition to fuel disciplined daily action.
(5) House Hacking Success
This show focuses exclusively on art of house hacking. Hosts Drew Klingler and Brad Labrie have both executed successful house hacks themselves and bring a wealth of practical, directly applicable content every week. Interviewees typically dive deep into their first house hack, detailing financials, best practices, regrets, and more.
When I first put a 4-unit house hack under contract, this podcast served as my go-to resource. As questions and uncertainties inevitably popped up, I felt comforted by the fact that answers likely sat somewhere in this show’s archives. It’s filled with nitty-gritty tips and tools that will turn you into a more confident and informed investor.
While this niche strategy focus might seem irrelevant to people living in coastal urban cities or opposed to the idea of house hacking, anyone can benefit from the knowledge shared. Since a house hack represents most investors’ first deal, it’s helpful to hear how individuals progress from the house hack into other areas of real estate. Often, house hacking simply serves as a catalyst for much larger scale real estate investing success.
